Reuben Karol, Class of 1944

Reuben Karol received the 2008 Distinguished Engineer award for contributions made during his outstanding 60-year career in Civil Engineering.  During this time he developed and implemented the current standards for Chemical Grouting - a process that modifies soils and rock, enabling them to carry greater loads, and to form seals against the flow of water.

Reuben first developed these concepts during his research at American Cyanamid Inc., as the Director of the Engineering Chemicals Research Center. Professor Karol continued that work at the Rutgers School of Engineering, in a relationship spanning 5-decades, including his current position as Professor Emeritus in the Department of Civil Engineering. In 1983 Mr. Karol wrote the definitive text on the subject "Chemical Grouting". In addition, he has written 3 college textbooks and 30 technical papers, or articles, and holds 5 US, and 1 British Patent.  In the 1950's he founded the company Karol-Warner, Inc. to develop and market soil test equipment and chemical grouting pumps.

In 2007, Reuben was presented with the Wallace Hayward Baker Award, given by the American Society of Civil Engineers - Geo Institute “in recognition of ingenious innovation in the field of ground modification.”

Mr. Karol received his Bachelor of Science (1944), and his Master of Science (1949) in Civil Engineering from Rutgers University.  Semi-retired now, and spends his time consulting, teaching, and sculpting.  He lives with his wife, Joan, in homes in New Jersey and Florida.
